You can set up a free account with o2 at: http://www.o2.co.uk and you get 10 free text messages to send every month.
However, if you wish to have more texts, you can set up more accounts with them, that's what I do, but I am an o2 customer anyway.

Depending on the cell phone provider you can go to the website and send the text for free.
Example: If my friend has Alltel service I can just go to the Alltel website and click on the link"send a Text". Get it?
