i guess you could argue that there is, the green party. but they lack any "true political clout" but yes we desperately need a real, independent party.

There is one (or more). Libertarians have a good pollitical platform if you like less government and more freedom. The Green Party works for those who believe we should all live in communes and sing kubayah. Then there's the Sociallist party that caters to those who believe the government should regulate everything and distribute the wealth equally.
The problem is that so many people are stuck in the REP/DEM mindset that the third party candidates never really have a chance. Often, they are not even included in the public debates. I think that is a bad pollicy. Some day. . . .

Hell yes!
We do have more than 2, but we need a powerful third. A Conservative party would be good, something to take over for the Republican party since it has really become the Fascist Party.

There are dozens of political parties. Some even make it to Congress. The "two-party system" is kinda good. To many parties in goernment can make it impossible to get any two reps to agree on anything. At the same time, it would be nice to see reps vote based on the people they represent, instead of party lines. The US government is and has been for some time, as corrupt and money-hungry as any world government in history.

The Republicans and Democrats have run ripshod over our American political system, making it damn near impossible to form a third and fourth party that could give us real choices.

Fact is, the Republicrats don't WANT us to vote! A large voter turn-out minimizes their chances of being re-elected, so they'd prefer that everyone stayed home (except for their own loyal voter base).
Ben Franklin once said: "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!"
Americans have sold out to the Republicrats by allowing these sleazy criminals to kidnap our rights to free choice. Like lobsters in a pot of lukewarm water, we will remain comfortable until the water reaches a boiling point. Then, we'll be screaming in agony over our own apathy!
So, our political prostitutes take bribes (excuse me, campaign contributions) from special interest groups, lobbyists, wealthy elitists, and big business who - in turn - make generous (if not illegal) contributions to keep the Republicrats in office.
They distract us with trivial matters such a non-binding resolutions on flag burning and gay marriage. Meanwhile we're preoccupied with such matters as our maxxed-out credit cards; $3.00-a-gallon fuel for our $60,000 SUVs; Britney Spears' love life; professional landscaping for our $300,000 houses; Jacko's pedophilia; "low prices - everyday" at WalMart on junk we don't even need; and the latest rankings of our favorite NASCAR driver.
As long as repulsive Republicrats keep us in that pot of warm water, they'll continue to enrich themselves while sucking off the taxpayers' teat.
Until we get off the couch, put down the remote and actually FIGHT to regain control of our country, nothing will change.
The Constitution gives us the right to bear arms against an oppressive and tyrannical government. But we're just too damned comfortable - so far.
Thomas Jefferson once said: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." That time is way past due! -RKO-

I'd like 4 or 5 good legitimate parties for choice. Unfortunately, it would still boil down to two big ones.

Party? I am always up for a party!
Actually YES
I could dig a party that was PROLIFE
No abortions and no death penalty, life is sacred
but I would settle for a party that would reduce taxes

Not without runoffs. Ralph Nader helped get Bush "elected." Have you remembered to send him your thank-you note?
