On your ignition key there is a little black box with a thin strip of metal inside of it, that is your security device. It is a system called VATS it is a built in resistor that sends an electrical signal to the ignition switch if the resistor built inside has gone bad then you need to replace it. The dealership has a machine that will read the ohm output on your key if it is old the resistors built inside of it may have gone bad. Just take your key and your VIN number and if its bad they can reprogram it or cut you a new key. Simple as that.

That is your theft-deterrent security feature working. You most likely have a key with a chip in it, and if you made another key without the chip, your car will start three times, then shut itself down. The car will need to be towed to the dealership, then when you convince them you are the rightful owner, they can reset the computer for you. If you had a non-security key made, throw it away at once.
Good news: your car won't ever be stolen by being hot-wired.

You don't mention the year but here is my input... I heard about an 03 Malibu which had similar issues... the guy who owned it spent a week without it while his mechanic tried everything.. the issue turned out to be the key.. seems it had a battery in it and it went dead... this key sent a code to the car to let it know the "owner" was trying to start it... It's along shot and a dealer item...you might want to try that...

its most likely not the key. It is the wires that connect the chip in the key to the cars computer. Try wiggling the key and moving it in and out. You will probably end up with a whole new ignition before its fixed.

What year is it? My friend has a 96 or 97 and his did the exact same thing. I think its a computer problem. I have an 01 and it hasn't happened to me but one time the chime came on when I started my car and stayed on for like 10 mins.

If your key has a chip in it you have probably bumped it and changed the code. You might have to get a new key and they are expensive. Look at your key and see if it has a black and metal chip made into the key.
