Can someone that's into the whole....how do you say? pop culture i think you call it, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton thing. I was reading this magazine that I like and it's a bit of that pop culture thing and one of the columns said "the new black". The old now uncool one was green and now the cool one was black. How can green be the new black? I dont understand any of that anyways but if something is stating that one color is a totally different color....am I supposed to know what the hell that means? Please help me

I once heard that Pink was the new Black. I don't know what that means. I think it is the media's way to confuse the consumer to buy "The Little Black Dress" in every color!

I'm not exactly into the whole thing, but I think I can help you with this question. "Basic Black" has been more or less "in" for so long that it has become kind of a baseline. Saying something is "the new black" is saying that this other color has become the new "always safe to wear-don't worry about it" color. I hope this helps. Me? Having just answered a question about fashion I feel a need to go and make sure the world isn't ending. :-)

"The New Black" is simply a term that means everyone is wearing it, or it's become more popular than the other colors this year. Black has always been the universal, popular color, the norm. So, if green is more popular, then it has become the norm. If they're saying that it was in last year, and black is "The New Black", the black is back in big style this year. Pink was "The New Black" a couple years ago.

People can always be found wearing black on the streets. It looks good on anybody, and a popular color for people to wear. When they say something's the new black it generally means that everybody loves and is most likely wearing that color. Or at least, all the celebs are.

" ____ is the new black" is basically a figure of speech and I would take it with a grain of salt ( see another figure of speech).
Since black is so basic and compliments so many ... it's like how do you say the "slice bread" of colors. Therefore when some one says something like " Green is the new black" it's because it's the new "it" color of the season. ......it's in style and "everyone" should be wearing it.
Don' t take those magazines or what people say too seriously.

I think black was once considered the "cool" color to be in. so if green is the new black, it means the new cool color. Or something like that.

The new black is a term that comes from the pop art movement. "The new black" means something is the latest fashion. Black, like the little black dress, will always be fashionable. The new black refers to a colour that is as chic and powerful and in the moment as black always is.

The language we all speak is being diluted to the point that this confusion is becoming more common. I just use the best english I can and look at someone like the idiot they are when they try to change the meaning of a word.
Yes it's frustrating but the only way to counteract it is to use proper english and expect other people to do the same.

I think what that means is that black is a color anyone can wear and wear with anything. I think they are refering to green being the new black in that way.

it is in reference to the fact that black is versitile and can be worn with anything, green is "the new black" is an expression meaning that green is the color to wear right now and can be versitile like black. not actually changing the color, just stating what the "in" color is right now. did that help at all?
