Uh oh. You've got a sock monster.
Don't worry, I've got one too.
I've named him Francis.

I think I have figured the sock thing out!
Socks are small and like to hide IN other clothes. I had a T shirts I had not worn for a while - when I put it on a sock fell out of it!
I suspect this has been happening for years. My sock get stuck in my son's sweats shirt. SO I end up with a load that is short one sock. He uses the shirt and tosses the sock into the wash Suddenly there is a single on of my socks in a load when I did not put any in.

Actually, however much I hate to burst the 'sock goblin' myth there can be a logical expalnation for this.
A modern day washing machine comprises of two drums. A steel inner drum (that you put your clothes in) and a palstic outer drum (that you can't usually see).
It is possible for small items (such as socks) to get forced through the small gap and get stuck between the two drums. This answers the question of the 'Missing Sock'.
It is also possible for said sock to, over time, be forced back out of the small gap near the door seal and therefore appear in the inner drum. Which answers the question of the 'Mysterious Reappearing Sock'
I'm sorry if I've shattered anyone's illusion. Sometimes I amaze myself at how sad I must be to know stuff like that

I share laundry in the building I live in and whenever I end up with a sock that isn't mine I use it for nail polish removing. Old socks with nail polish remover work soooo much better than cotton swabs or cotton balls or whatever else you use. It sounds weird but it's true... and what else are you going to do with one sock, knock on everyone's door and ask if it's there's?

I noticed this too,I always find an odd sock. I think there is a sock dimension, where our socks just nip in and out of from time to time.

Kriss 1805 has beaten me to it, but he's dead right. That's why you either lose small items or find somebody else's' if you've used a launderette.
