Can anybody provide me with an historic example where a terrorist organization was actually defeated through military action? It seems to me that terrorism in the Western hemisphere was - at least in the 20th century - always overcome by police action and/or political and social changes.

No nothing can be defeated by military action...it can only be used as a temporary means of control.

With terrorists, or the movements/beliefs that fuel their violence, military action can only serve as a control, sort of like setting a small fire in the bush to divert a larger, uncontrollable one that would otherwise burn down a town. Unfortunately no one has yet come up with a way that is viable to appease or stop the movements--we should be working harder on that aspect I agree, but 'til then I think the break-fires will have to be continued.

No, nothing can defeat it. As long as evil exists there will always be terrorism. It has existed since the beginning of man. I think it is around to stay.
