I'd rather the one that was suited for the child.
If they're happy in their career, that's the best situation.

Medical is out, while it seems lucrative, it has severely changed over the past 10 years and I believe will continue to do so. The insurance system is taking larger and larger bites out of what a doctor can earn, forcing a doctor to work more and more hours and longer work weeks. Also, the cost of the education alone is staggering and the payback rate for the loans is increasing.
Engineering is the way to go. Engineering combines math and science and physics into one and technology is the future. The cost of education is affordable and with experience the job market is wide open. Being 'mobile' and not staying in one job/one employer is the key. Keep taking on new challenges, build experience and a portfolio and the sky is the limit.
I am not quite sure what you mean by chartered accountancy. If it has anything to do with the field of being a CPA, I would not think the future is too great. Tax laws will be changing, and, if a flat tax comes into the picture in the future, it would narrow the field enormously.

TOO many Accountants, lots of engineers may need to be specific and not broad about engineering. EG not just studying computers like networking when programming is more specialist with less people therefore programming would be better to study
Medical field is always good can live anywhere int he world but very stressful and less quality of life only quantity.
There are far more prestigious jobs than the same old accounting medical enginneering and LAW. Only people fromthe british colonies still home in on these same old careers - then what happens is there are so many graduates in these professions that there are no jobs ie accountancy and law.
You have to get with the times there are so many other careers that require lenght of study and good career at the end ofit

I would prefer my child go into a profession that plays to his strengths. Each of the fields above require certain aptitudes that every person doesn't have. Asking an artist to be an engineer is a recipe for trouble, even if he is brilliant and "can do whatever he sets his mind to."

Please let your child decide. Ultimately, it is his or her life and this is what they will be spending their whole life doing. My parents have always wanted me to go into medicine and I've never wanted to. I ultimately decided to go into finance, and I'm quite happy with my decision except that my parents still leave no opportunity to tell me that I didn't heed their advice and go into medicine. Please don't do the same to your children.
Even though the medical field has its advantages, it still takes over 10 years to become a licensed practitioner, and if you decide for your child what to do in those 10 years, then he or she really won't be satisfied. Not only will they not be intrinsically motivated, he or she will also hate studying.
I really wish my parents would stop bugging me about going into medicine, and I really wish you won't do that your child as well.
Another thing that I have noticed and I want to mention is that I have come accross many many doctors who have been forced into their profession by their family and these doctors can only find one motivation to do what they do: money.
We don't need any more financially motivated doctors than we have already. (Yes we have docs working in third world countries, etc. But honestly I have never come across any such doctors anywhere; I've been to third world countries and all i have seen are doctors with lavish houses and patients waiting to be overcharged even though they can't afford their fees. The doctors that i have come across have only tried to squeeze more money out of me.)
What we need are people doing what they internally want to do and were meant to do. The world would be a much happier place then...

The medical profession is a growing profession, there are a variety of options and them doing something so good and helpful would make me proud of my child. There's such a rewarding satisfaction knowing that you've saved someone's life, or kept them from getting sick, or helped them get better. Plus, my worst subject was anything having to do with science, so I'd want them to have the option that I didn't :)
Ultimately it is up to my child to choose the profession he/she wants, and I will be proud of him/her no matter what he/she does!

Medical - It really is a skill for life.
Engineering is all going overseas, and Accountancy is now becoming an off the shelf service rather than a profession.

Medical. Doctors have way more job security, and there's demand for them in a whole lot of places. Plus they give a lot to humanity. Accountants are dull I should know. I got an uncle who's one, and he looks kinda depressed all the time. Engineers? Well, if you like physics and building stuff, here's your calling. I still go with medicine though.

Engineering, but very specialist like geological fields. Why? Because of the interest of the job itself, travel opportunities and a whacking great salary.
Otherwise they won't be able to get onto the housing market, for a start.
How sad is that for our children.
No-one with a low paid job will be able to live in their own house. But maybe that's a good incentive for paying attention at school!!

a profession of their own choosing.
If they don't enjoy what they are doing they will not invest as much work in it as will the people who enjoy it.
Therefore they will never be as good. Therefore they won't find it as easy to find a job.
As long as they are able to support themselves it is OK.
Really I would like at least one to become a really good car mechanic. Though I don't think one will want to.
