I am renovating a recently purchased 1930s apartment. The ceiling is very nicely decorated across the face of the old plasterboard (the plasterboard is the old type with hessian fibre running through the middle of it) and has cool cornices too.
There are now many little divots (about 1cm cirle) in lines where i imagine the josits run. I think the sanding of the ceiling has encouraged the plaster boards to drop down a bit, and where the fastener is pulling through the boards the divot is created in the paintwork over the fastener.
Is this common, is my ceiling going to fall in, what do I do about it?
Thanks for any suggestions.

this is common.when the house settles over time pressure is applied to the areas of the fasterners(nails/screws)and will cause these divets.you can easerly go over the areas with joint compound.sand and then paint.nowadays strapping is placed on the ceiling joists so when the house settles and the wood expands and contracts the pressure is put on the strapping and not the sheetrock.good luck

i agree with the previous answer but if you do not feel safe with that get some sheetrock screws and add a few to each line and remember to counter sink them about a 1/16in. cover with plaster and sand and paint.
