You know when your pet cat or dog is happy, sad or scared. Do you think a pet fish has feelings like this and if so how do they express these feelings?

If fish didn't have any feelings at all, they wouldn't be able to act out instinctive behaviour. Instinctive behaviours sit in the brain as a series of instructions; when this happens, do that. Outside events are the external trigger for the behaviour, internal emotions are the internal trigger.
So your fish feels scared when you frighten it, and swims away from the threat, and hides in the weed.
If animals didn't have any emotions they wouldn't flee from danger, and they wouldn't be able to mate and breed. Fish are simple animals so they don't have the full range of emotions that you have.

I am an animal lover and I have this arguement with my husband about fishing. He says fish do not have feelings however I did read that they have nerves in their mouth and when caught on a hook they do feel pain. As far as emotions I am not sure but I know they know when you are going to feed them because they look out at you and swim to the top of the tank. So all and all I think I would answer yes to your question

Yes, they have feelings, but very primitive feelings. I gravely doubt they are anything comparable to, say, feelings in even a hamster, let alone in a cat or dog. Their brains are too small relative to body sizes. Enjoy the fish as fish. :)

I think they feel fear and pain, but it is hard to know whether they feel anything else such as happiness or sadness, since they lack the ability to show their feelings the way a dog can.

fish of course they have feeling, all animals do, it would be less humane to give them no feelings. I am being serious, I have tried to work out an answer to this question that I asked myself years ago, I have come to the conclusion after much research that they have major feelings as we do.

As you and I have feeling? No. As our dogs, and cats? No Do they feel pain? Yes. Can they feel fear? Maybe they can display a fear response, but generally forget about it ~3 second after the fear stimulus disappears.

of course fish have feelings, it just that it does not show up like other animals do, some fish will not eat when they feel sad or sick, you just have to know your fish.
