Everybody knows the price of gasoline goes up daily. We here in America have gotten used to low gas prices. What can we as citizens of this country do on an individual basis to reduce them?

I know about cutting what it cost us as individuals. How do we get the price per gallon to reduce?

I think if more people refused to purchase gasoline and started walking and riding bikes more would help. I think we should return to the small family owned bussinesses in our neighborhoods, instead of driving to these large coroperate companies like Wal-mart. I think this is one of the reasons we are so dependant on gasoline. Ive notice aroun where I live there are huge strip malls poping up all over the place, and they are out of the way from the neighborhoods and surrounded by huge highways and freeways, which makes it dangerous and out of the way to walk to. Find some of the local mom and pop stores close to home, if there are any left. We are driving out of the way more because alot of our local bussinesses are going under. We need to as a country stop being so lazy and start walking and riding bikes more often.

The price of gas responds the most to demand.

The whole petroleum industry is a well oiled machine that moves very slowly. They can only pump it out at a certain rate, refineries are deliberately run at peak capacity and there are just so many pipes to deliver the fuel. The oil industry can't just change capacity at will, all they can do is maintain some reserves that act as a buffer for demand fluctuations, and alter the price to try and control demand to meet their capacity.

If they see their reserves going down, they will raise prices to stabilize the levels. Conversely, if they see reserves going up, they will lower prices to stimulate demand. If people replace their pick-up trucks with economical sedans over the next 10 years, our demand will decrease dramatically and gas prices will drop. The drop in prices will cause people to start driving their trucks again ... etc. until gas prices reach a stable level.

As an individual, I would look out for myself and buy and economical car as well as a "flex-fuel" car. That way, I would not feel the brunt of the gas prices and I would be at the head of the pack of people who will be scrambling to buy economical cars. (The price of the cars will likely increase as demand increases). Also, be comforted that as gas prices go up, it encourages alternative fuel research. Alcohol may be coming soon to a gas station near you.

The price of gas is where it should be - what the market will bear.
