Im an 80's boy and back then bands where unique and you could recognise who it was straight away.
Now everyone (with the odd exception) sounds the same.
I am a professional musician of many years and have taught at a very high level so no going on how I know nothing about music. I just wondered if anyone else thinks the same?

You're absolutely right, 80s music gets slagged off all the time by music snobs, but you could tell Duran Duran from Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Madonna from Cyndi Lauper and Prince from Michael Jackson. 90s and 00s music is full of crap - mostly inoffensive - interchangeable guitar based bands, mini Pat Boones such as Westlife, forgettable pap boy/girl bands, horrible monotonous electronic dance music, boring balladeers such as Celine Dion, rap (with a silent C, these people have all the musical talent of William Shatner).
There aren't really any big superstars from the 90s are there? Most of it will be forgotten, unlike the 60s, 70s and 80s.

80's had some good ones, but I'm partial to 50's, 60's and 70's. I like some of the 90's, but music was drastically changing by the mid 90's and not so much for the better. I can probably count on one hand all the songs I actually like from the last 7 years. Not many!!!I just listen to the classic rock & oldie stations to get relief! Its so sad that music has deterioated such as it has!!!

Most of what we have been doing recently is re-packaging old ideas and styles so there seems less innovation on the surface. It is truly difficult to be unique now with so many comparisons flying about from the past. I agree totally concerning the sterile manufactured stuff that falls off the assembly line... and a bit more authenticity and integrity artistically wouldn't go a miss too.

I don't agree with you. I'm a great fan of modern music cause firstly it's not boring at all and the beat is really good and anyone can dance to it. The music I'm in to is R 'n B, house, hip-hop, afro-pop and gospel and I can clearly identify the artists cause they have different styles even though they do the same type of music. Take for instance Kanye West and Twista, same hip-hop but different styles and they're both really good and if you listen deep to their lyrics you'll find no crap in it. So please don't judge modern music cause it's the best thing that keeps us going.

Most of it is crap now. I like a lot of 70's and 80's stuff. I think music was better then.

I agree totally you knew who you was listening to straight away.

It's a shame what happend to Top of the Pops.

Plus buying the music then was more exciting I think. going into HMV et al for a picture Disc vynl was more fun.

I hate this identikit trend going. Everything sounds the same I gave up on music aimed at my age group years ago, and got into stuff like the Human League, Depeche Mode, The Thompson Twins,OMD, Howard Jones, Erasure, Roxette-I could go on for days, but I won't.

Well I go more for the rock genre and I find that I am able to recognise each band pretty well. I do find with R&B/Hip-hop/Rap whatever all that stuff falls into sounds the same though.

I have to agree. I dj on the weekends and I can't stand the stuff people are asking for today. Don't get me wrong there is some decent stuff out right now, but it just seems like if you can shake your body you can get a record contract.

Check out the Bonnaroo scene and those bands. (Some of them are from the eighties!) I don't know what kind of music you like, but there are good bands out there, just not on the radio. You have to look a little harder, but it's worth it. Check out Keller Williams!
