A psychiatrist has an M.D. A psychologist doesn't.

Psychologist are people who study the psyche and behavior -- why people do what they do, how they deal with emotions and situations. They can be licensed counselors. Psychiastrists are medical doctors who specialize in disorders (mental, behavioral, emotional) that may have a medical/physical cause for them. They can do counseling too.

You go to a psychologist because your dad was an alcoholic, you're struggling with being overweight, you just got divorced, your best friend died, etc. They will listen to you, counsel you, help you find a way to grow from the experience and get back to a happy life.

You go to a psychiatrist (or will be referred) because you have outbursts at school or work, you have wild mood swings on a very regular basis (bipolar), you have tried 'talk therapy' for your sadness and it's not getting better. In any case where a patient would need medication in order to regulate their mental and emotional well being, a psychiatrist is the M.D. that can prescribe that. It's not unusual for a psychologist to refer a patient to a psychiatrist if they evaluate that person has a medical condition.

There are quite significant differences between Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychotherapy roles and they tend to deal with different types of problems, although there is considerable overlap in their work

Psychology is the study of people: how they think, how they act, react and interact. Psychology is concerned with all aspects of behaviour and the thoughts, feelings and motivation underlying such behaviour.

Psychology is a discipline that is firstly concerned with the normal functioning of the mind and has explored areas such as learning, remembering and the normal psychological development of children. Psychology is one of the fastest growing university subjects and is becoming more and more available in schools and colleges.

Psychologists deal in the way the mind works and motivation, and can specialise in various areas such as; Mental Health work and Educational and Occupational Psychology.

It is useful to remember that Psychologists are not usually medically qualified and only a small proportion of people studying psychology degrees will go on to work with patients.

Psychiatry is the study of mental disorders and their diagnosis, management and prevention. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have qualified in Psychiatry.

WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Psychotherapy is conducted in several different ways for example Individual, Group, Couple and Family Psychotherapy. They are all ways of helping people to overcome stress, emotional problems, relationship problems or troublesome habits.

There are many different approaches in Psychotherapy, these are the "Talking Treatments" which include;

- Cognitive Behavioural Therapies
- Psychoanalytic Therapies
- Psychodynamic Therapies
- Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapies
- Systematic Therapies
- Hypno-Psychotherapy
- Experiential Constructivist Therapies

A Psychotherapist may be a psychiatrist, psychologists or other mental health professionals who have had further specialist training in Psychotherapy. Increasingly there are a number of Psychotherapists who do not have backgrounds in the above fields but who have undertaken in depth training in this area.

Consultant Psychiatrists in Psychotherapy are medical doctors who have qualified in Psychiatry and then undertaken a three of four year Specialist Registrar training in Psychotherapy. It is the policy of the College of Psychiatrists that each Trust should employ one, with a minimum of one consultant per 200,000 of population.

Their role is in the Psychotherapeutic treatment of patients with Psychiatric illnesses, thus they supply an essential component of Psychiatric care alongside physical treatments such as medication. They also play a major role in training the mental health workforce in Psychological Therapies, and in providing staff support.

One big difference is a psychatrist has their medical license and with that, their ability to prescribe medicines. As in the field of psychology, there are many different "types" of 'psych' doctors....forensic, pediatric, geriatric, etc. The psychiatrist is usually referred to by a psychologist when his methods are not enough or medication is needed to assist in counseling and treatment.

phycologist tries to find out why someone thinks the way they do. they try to understand the human brain to find out what made that person different. they work to find an inner concious and toy with it. also, they can tell what kind of person you are by just having a decent conversation to you. they try to find out who people are and can psyc you out anytime and you not even know it.
physchatrist tries to help you with mental problems-abuse, drug problems, infatuations and fetishes. they try to work with your mind and help you calm your concious down
