I think we're very much out of the Victorian mentality. In fact, we've come so far that the woman's role is clouded. Should we not celebrate our gift of creating life? In matriarchal religions of the past, women were revered, life was protected, and violence was pretty much non-existant. I don't think sexual repression even comes into this equation. Women do have sexual powers, but they have always had this - in Victorian times, and even where the feminine form is covered up. I agree with you that men try to subdue this power, however, the more they try, the more powerful is the woman's sexuality. Ironically, it is when we start burning our bras and taking on masculine roles that we lose that power!

Sexual repression was indeed supported if not invented by patriarchal religions. Dont know if it was due to their own masculine inferiority rather than a means to control men and women. Even tho we think we are very liberated these days we are still suffering from a form of Victorian mentality. Liberation in sexual terms is people feeling comfortable with themselves and their sexual proclivities. This is most definitely not the norm in our society. The interesting and deep question here is when you ask Is understanding our sexual power the key to our own spiritual evolution - the vote will be out on that one, but my answer is a resounding yes, it is.

As a woman, I feel unable to associate with any religion as you are quite right they were established by men and for men. I am particularly saddened to see women espouse religions which enslave them and keep them subservient nor am I particularly gladdened to see women ministers as they are joining an unchangeable patriarchal system and are actually doing us a great disservice by giving the church a lifeline.
In Saudi Arabia, they force women to cover themselves from head to toe in black so men don't lust after them. I think that says it all. This policy is the result of fear not because men are inferior but because they are sexually weak.
Men can do anything they like to women under the banner of religion and there is nothing to stop them:
honour killings, wearing of the burka, banning of abortion, etc...the list is endless.
I think this is why a lot of women are turning towards alternative religions like wicca or witchcraft where women are celebrated and not treated like an unwanted adjunct.

Hmmm. Three questions there... The third is, to me, the easiest to answer: yes!
Denial and delusion? Well, we're certainly hypocrites - look at the tabloid press. "Family values" on the outside, but we all love a bit of dirt!
Sexual/spiritual evolution - yeah, I'm game!
