The soldiers were in the Shaba Farm area. This land legally belomgs to Syria but is also claimed by Lebanon. Lebanon is trying to acquire the area through the courts. The region does NOT belong to Israel although it is occupied bythem. In legal terms, the Israeli soldiers crossed a border into Syria, a provokative act by any terms.
The Israeli response was iinconsistent with the action and begs the questions, why were Israeli soldiers there and why was Israel's response so excessive.

Israel does not have any agreement with Hezbollah. It is kind of hard to reach an agreement with someone who doesn't recognize your existence and wishes your destruction. And even if Israel did have an "agreement" it would be one in name only and meaningless to both sides.
You must realize that Hezbollah has been a growing problem over the past few years since Israel withdrew from Lebanon which came to a head when they did this raid. They have been stockpiling weapons. They have aprox. 10,000 Katyusha rockets and many more longer range missiles that are capable of... well you've seen the result.
I beleive that Israel's ultimate goal here is not to just get back the soldiers (if that's likely, wich it may not be) but to cripple or destroy Hezbollah. If they succeed in doing so, it may be beneficial to Lebanon itself. Hezbollah has an effective "mini state" in south Lebanon of which the Lebanese government has little or no contorl over. If Hezbollah is gone, they can then assert their authority over that area.

Hezbollah bombed a road side border patrol hummer they killed two soldiers and kidnapper 2 more - then when 4 soldiers went to save the 2 kidnapped ones Hezbollah killed them
Hezbollah is a terrorist group that is funded from Iran - Hezbollah attacked Israel because Iran wanted to draw away attention from the fact that it is not complying to security rules with their nuclear program
Israel broke no agreement and just the opposite - since leaving Lebanon 6 years ago Hezbollah has been crossing over into Israel and laying mines and boob traps.

Hezbollah's tactics are to cause maximum civilian casualties, to spread fear and to inflict damage in Israel.
Its intention in crossing the border and capturing two Israeli soldiers was hinted at in a statement it released at the time. This referred to "fulfilling the promise to liberate its prisoners" held by Israel.
There have been prisoner exchanges before, as in 2004, when Israel released 436 Palestinian, Hezbollah and other prisoners and 59 bodies in exchange for one Israeli civilian and the remains of three soldiers.
Hezbollah has carried out such an attack before, so it has a track record in this tactic. In October 2000 it captured three Israeli soldiers and took them into Lebanon. It is thought, however, that the soldiers died in the ambush.
Hezbollah must have realised that in view of the Israeli reaction to the earlier capture of its soldier by Hamas and its announced refusal to negotiate, that a strong Israeli response would be expected. If it did not realise this, it might have miscalculated.
On the other hand, it might have thought that it could withstand, cover and benefit from the onslaught and that, at the end of the day, Israel would have to negotiate for its soldiers.
It might also have wanted to show solidarity with, and taken the pressure off, Hamas in Gaza.
Whether it was acting under instructions from Iran to divert attention from the Iranian nuclear issue before the G8 summit as Israel has alleged is not known.

Israel broke the agreement? One of the conditions for Israel leaving Lebanon about three years ago was Hizbullah was to be disarmed. The POWs taken during the conflict were to be released AFTER Hizbullah was disarmed.
Do they look disarmed to you?
Hizbullah only exist with the support of those who want to see Israel destroyed. If Hizbullah isn't starting trouble with Israel it loses support.
Hizbullah --mindless uncivilized behaviour? When have they been mindful and civilized in their behaviour. It's a good thing I'm not GOD or Allah. Or they would have had all the problems Job did until they repented.

The problem is we are dealing with at least two religions perfectly happy to desecrate the holiest of religious sites, a site that none of the sides involved owns. A good enough number of these people hate each other and have very, very little hope of peace. Why did they take soldiers? - why not?, this type of conflict would have broken anyway when their is so much hatred involved. I like to remember the story from a year ago about the child who died on the palestinian side and their family gave his organs to save the life of an Israeli child - gestures like that should bring peace but it does not, it means nothing to those intent on division in that region, not just Iran and Syria but elements within Israel and Palestine. It is a shame that our own leaders have decided to choose a side when neither side is innocent.

Israel still occupies some Lebanese lands in the south also have many Lebanese POW's captured for many many years now. Though I don't approve H/allah capturing the soldiers but unfortunately Israel refused over the years to negotiate their freedom and sent a wrong message that what is taken by force should be returned by force. Also we cant deny the fact that H/allah follow some Iranian and Syrian agenda that does not coop with Lebanon priorities and interest.

Yeah they do know why they took the soldiers. They are acting under the orders of Syria & Iran..
Why?...
To draw israel into conflict.
Israel didn't break any agreement. In fact, they gave back all the land to the Palestinians in return for peace, but they didn't get peace. Palestine BROKE the agreement.
GO AND READ THE FACTS AGAIN.
