six is the tenths place

why?

okay with decimals the number itself is like saying it is over whatever number it is classified as...

.6=6/10 thus it is called the tenths place because it is over 10
(it also represents how many zeros are in the number)

.61 1 is in the hundredths place

because the number is would be over 100

61/100

since numbers are aligned right (which will help you see this) the 1 is over the 2nd 0 which when there are 2 zeros after 1 it means its one hundred so its the hundredths place the 6 is over the first zero if the other zero wasn't there the number would be 10

.612

the two is in the thousandths place

612/1000 the two is over the third zero and when 3 zeros are after 1 it is called a thousand get the picture?

so when you look at number with the decimal and you need to determine what place it is count how many numbers are there and the put it over 1 with that many zeros.

.6123
there are 4 zeros so the number would be over 1 with 4 zeros or 10,000 so the three is in the ten thousandths place...

6123/10,000

If you think of the number 10 first of all it takes ten ones (10 x 1) to make 10. It is the same after the decimal point. It takes 10 x 0.1 to make the number 1. Therefore 0.6 means there are 6 x 0.1s. Hope that makes sense.

The KEY to dealing with decimals is to realize that numbers to the left of the decimal point are whole numbers. Numbers to the right are fractional.

As you move right, you have tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc.

So 1.97 would mean there's 1 whole, 9 tenths, and 7 hundredths.
