i don't think it would have something to do with a horcrux... but possibly it could have something to do with harry that's for sure. jk says that she likes luna a lot so i think she's going to incorporate her in the final book. OMG I CANT WAIT FOR IT!!

All is said in the book is that she died because while casting a spell. It was an accident. No where in the book is it said that she died in the Department of Mysteries. Luna, having witnessed her mothers death, wouldn't have been allowed in the Department of Mysteries anyway. As to whether it had anything to do with a horcrux, the answer is probably no, but that has yet to be seen. There is a possibility I suppose but unlikely.

i don't think that it could have been something about a horcrux.luna's mum might not even KNOW about horcruxes. the book does say that she was experimenting with potions, but that might not be true. maybe, she was trying to create a different kind of weapon, unlike the prophecy(against voldemort). some death eater must have discovered her and killed her.

"I have been thinking about this a lot and it just came to me now, what spell have we seen backfired in the series; Lockhart’s Obliviate spell. When the Obliviate spell backfired on Lockhart it worked just like an Oblivate spell should, took his memory away.

In OotP Luna tells us that her mother died due to a spell she was working on in the department of mysteries backfiring on her. What spell though do we know that can kill out right if it does backfire on the witch or wizard, the Avada Kedavra killing curse?

Was Luna Lovegood's mother trying to figure out how the spell that hit Harry backfired and hit Voldemort? Was her mother trying to solve a mystery, how to block the Avada Kedavra killing curse but made a fatal error and killed herself in the process?

Did Luna's mother crack open the Avada Kedavra killing curse and find a way to stop it killing the victim it intended on killing or was she trying to destroy something else with that curse and it backfired on her?

Do you think the spell that Luna Lovegood's mother was working on and her work play an important role in the next book?

Did her spell backfire or was she getting to close to something?"

Well I don't thtink that its ever been mentioned in the book. Rowling just wrote that Luna Lovegood lost her mom when she was little while the latter was making some experiments on curses.
