Prostitution has been part of human societies for literally hundreds of thousands of years (there are even examples of prostitution in our closest ape relatives, bonobos and chimpanzees). Puritans try to apply their own narrow moral viewpoint on others from time to time, but they are inevitably doomed to failure by basic human nature. Unfortunately the US is currently in the political grip of such short-sighted folk, and we are suffering the consequences.
The best solution is obvious: legalize it, tax it, and use insurance based measures to mitigate any health issues.
The same applies to drug abuse and other 'sins'

Its illlegal because it spreads disease very readily, and disease spreading is not good for growth of a country
also it is unsafe for the girl, there have been quite a lot of prostitute-only serial killers-- think Green river Killer
our christain based society is against multi-partner sex
making it illegal lessens the amount of prostitution and so in theory there are less STDs, prostitute-killings, and multi-partner sexual relationships, than if it were legal (because some people don't want to brake the law, so some people that might otherwise do it wont because its illegal)
all in all though, I think that law enforcers should be harder on the johns than on the girls. usually the johns suffer no consequence, and there are quite a few cases of police officers then sexually harassing/abusing prostitutes after arresting them. This reputation also makes prostitutes less likely to report a john who hurt them, meaning that they can get away with even more. but you have to remember these girls aren't doing it for the sex, or because they want to, they are doing it for the fast easy money, usually they can't get the money another way (uneducated a lot of the time).

It causes a public nuisance.. prostitution is illegal, and picking up a hooker is promoting that. Like selling pot or crack is illegal, and if you buy it you are promoting the sale of it.
Personally, I don't care so long as you don't do it in front of my house.

Even in places like Holland and Germany where it is legal, the "pavement princesses" are a danger to the neighborhood and to you. If you see a prostitute on the street you're within walking distance of a crack dealer.

Because the people decide what's legal and illegal and most people are against prostitution. Same reason why marijuana is illegal and so forth. Plenty of people would be for it, but the majority rules here.

Not if you're just giving her a ride. Prostitution is illegal and there are many reasons for it. Mostly, it's immoral and not accepted by normal society.

I don't understand it either. I mean, someone is offering a product that someone else is buying ... to me it's just a business like anything else. Making it legal would probably help make it a cleaner more respectable business.
