The most interesting and comprehensive theory I've heard about dragons existing in the same way as, say, cats do is by Peter Dickenson in his book, 'Flight of Dragons'. He says that he believes that dragons did once exist but are now extinct because they are such biologically unstable creatures. In his book, he explains how they could exist, how they could fly, mate etc. on established scientific principles, and also explains how myths about them such as corroesive blood and fire breathing can be understood through their biology. It's a fantastic book so I'm not going to give the game away, but if you're really interested Amazon seem to have it.
Dickenson also makes two very convincing arguments for dragons being real:
Firstly, dragons are the only mythological creatures mentioned in the Old Testament;
Secondly, myths of dragons appear in almost every European culture from the last three thousand years, and in all these myths the same characteristics keep cropping up again and again. These are civilisations thousands of miles apart with almost no way of communicating with each other. The established explaination for these similiarites is that individuals would travel from culture to culture, bringing the stories with them, and over the course of years the myths would migrate. A far more simple explaination, however, is that they are based in fact.

Yes, there have been dragon sightings, tales, you know, all that good stuff. A lot of people theorize they aren't physical, but I've had some odd experiences that would point to both. But really, does it matter if someone believes in them or not? If they are real, they'll keep on existing. I don't buy the Dinosaur theory, since dinosaurs don't look like dragons. They didn't have wings, Dragons were usually depicted as quadrupeds, and dinosaurs that were quadrupeds didn't have flesh rending claws like Dragons.

There is in fact a real dragon! The Kimoto Dragon! It is a very large member of the lizard group. Of which I am a member, I am called the Good Lazy Lizard or King Lizard. Seriously, Dragons are in many myths and cultures and may actually have their roots in reality. We often give names that are familiar to those things that we don't recognise. Think about it.

Scientists have no proof. But that doesn't mean anything. There are lots of fossils of organisms that have evolved that they haven't found yet.
There are stories of dragons all over the world. How can civilizations across the world that had no contact with each other come up with creatures so similar unless there actually was one?
