If anything I think the movie Troy shows the dumbing down of our society. It used to be that you couldn't consider yourself educated until you had a basis in the classics; i.e. Homer, Sophocles, Aeschylus, etc. If you hadn't read The Iliad or The Odyssey you couldn't consider yourself a scholar. Nowadays, we're lucky if people have heard of Homer, let alone read him. The movie Troy was so far off from the actual story anyone that has read The Iliad would have been quite annoyed, as I was.
Overall, I think the fact that there is still interest in those subjects is great, but why do they have to Hollywood-ize every film? The true story of the Trojan War as told in Homer's Iliad is a great story and does not need embellishment or dumbing down.
So, basically I think the societal impact depends on the person - hopefully the movie will spark interest in people and make them want to go out and read the story from which the movie is taken; but more than likely many people will simply see the movie and think that THAT is what Homer wrote when in reality what Homer wrote in The Iliad is far superior.

Sorry for the rant! :) I happen to love Classical literature and Homer is my favourite.

a.) Troy really happened. Or so the ancient concrete slabs say.
b.) Our environment and surroundings are forever changing. Our technology is improved every day, new food is made all the time and running shoes are being manufactured every second. The only thing that never changes is *dum-dum-dum*

...Human Nature. So no matter where a story is set, we can relate to it, because we all experience emotions etc.
c.) I strongly dislike Paris in that film.
d.) How groovy is the music? Love it.

I don't think it is suppose to relate. It does however relate to the Illiad. A story by homer. It is based directly off one of the main characters from the story which is Achilles. However the story does continue off from him and many more characters were included. It then goes to the sequal called The Oddessy.

i believe it is to late to relate troy to our society. we all now act as our own wooden horses and succumb to the trap that is society. we allow so much to be done and yet sit back and let it occur.
