I find it difficult to accept that our veterans went to war to defend our American values ... so they could come home and live off the government.

Free handouts? Do you mean, like when someone stands by the freeway on-ramp with a sign that says, "I'm a veteran, anything will help, God bless you"?
Or do you mean like filing a claim for government provided benefits?
As for the latter, those government benefits are 'compensation' for our citizens who served their country. Think of them as 'fringe benefits' like big companies give their people. They were put in place by our elected leaders, and if you qualify for them, then you deserve them and have earned them. They are by no means 'handouts' any more than filing an auto insurance claim when you have an accident is a handout.
As for the begging, it is bogus, and never give one of these people a dime. I see them all the time, and they are always smoking. I want to go up to them and say, "How on earth can you afford cigarettes? I can't".
Also, you always see a pile of garbage near their post. They are lazy, and just want something for nothing. I understand people make as much as $300 a day or more from this kind of begging.
I once talked to a guy in a wheelchair begging in front of the supermarket. He said he was a veteran. I told him that I wouldn't give him something for nothing, but that I would give him a job. I noted that his legs didn't work so I said I'd hire him as a telemarketer. He gave me every excuse in the book as to why he couldn't work, but he could talk, and he could dial a phone!
SUCCESS!

Veterans deserve 'free handouts' (benefits) and everything else we can give them. It takes guts to risk your life for your country while earning poverty level income for your efforts and then having to put up with anti-war activists.
Thank them for their service, they are what keeps us free.
'nuff said.

What free handouts?....while you are here asking stupid questions...our soldiers are risking their lives. I like to consider it earned benefits.
I served and I really don't see what you think are free handouts??? You have to name some because I don't see it.

Depends on what you're considering "free handouts" -- education assistance after serving (yes), free medical (yes), free housing (no).

They wouldn't be getting anything for which they hadn't already paid.
