Tree companies have a stump grinder that will grind it out. Or you could let it rot out. Drill some hole in the top of it and there are some chemicals you can put on the stump to help eat it out. Some people will even try burning the stump out.

I personally recommend the stump grinder.

A word of caution, we had a tree cut down about 15 years ago and the stump ground, this was a massive poplar tree, easily 100 feet tall. Couple years ago i was mowing over this area and disappeared into the ground. The roots had rotted leaving a cavity that was completely invisible on the surface. The ground literally swallowed me up. Fortunately it left the lawnmower and my wife came over to get it and put it away. So I hollered out of the ground at her. She left me in there and I died. So be careful around areas which had large trees.

A tip is to cut the stump high up, maybe 4 feet from the ground, this give some leverage if you wanted to pull the roots up,

A Stump Grinder

you can get a tree surgeon in to make a proper job of it, or you can a special poison that you put on to the stump and leave it well alone as it dies (easier to grind out then) or you can do what we did - get an irish chap who was doing work in the area at the time to put a secure a chain round said stump and to his van then drive hard in opposite direction, pulling stump out of ground in messy, noisy but quite spectacular way!!!!

I would personally go with the tree surgeon these days!!

You would have to cut just above ground level so you get a relatively flat ground surface. However the roots would still be there, which could prove to be a problem later on.

The best way is to burn it out. Chop out the middle and burn with petrol carefully. It takes a while but the charred remains can be picked away to a desired level and the roots do not continue to grow .

Would it be possible to burn it ? Sorry didn't mean to answer a question with a question. Just a thought. One other option could be to hollow it out and use it as a planter for flowers.
