Yes and I think it is illegal to open other peoples' personal post anywhere in the world whether at home or work
However, in an office if the post is addressed to a company for the attention of someone and that person is away or has left the company, then it is permissible for a company official to open the post because it is business and not personal post.

In an office, it is presumed that any post will be looked at, read, recorded, etc. by anyone in the office, unless it is marked "Personal". It would be illegal for a non-employee to open any post unless specifically asked to do so.
So if the receptionist opened your letter that began, Dear Tigglywumps, how was it for you last night", she/he has a perfect right to post it on the company bulletin board.

I don't think its illegal but it is rude to open another persons mail especially if its marked 'Private and Confidential'. Unless that person gave you permission or instructed you to open their mail for them then its okay.
Same rules applies to office environment. Of course if there's mail for someone that don't work in your company anymore then by all means open it or throw it away. People should change their address once they change jobs anyway.

The Queen protects the mail.
If you intercept someone elses mail, you are challenging the Queen's authority which could end you up in prison.
In an office enviroment you can open envelopes as long as you have permision from the person that the letter is addressed

Yes it is! And quite rightly so! Mail remains property of Royal Mail and shouldn'tbe opened by anyone else but the recipient. in an offcie situation things may vary. Should the envelop reads "Private and personal" Then you shouldn't open it! Now i personally refused to poen any letter addressed to anyone else in the building (Care setting) if i made a point of informing the member of staff that they had received a letter and, should they tell me to open it, read its contents over the phone then i would. I cracked up when i went back on shift after my days off to find out that two letters addressed to me had been poened by another member of staff. They were personal letters from relatives and contained very private information. I complained about it and member of staff who had opened and read them got herself a warning.

One big no, providing it's not a confidential mail, then it could lead one into disciplinary proceedings by the firm one works for.
