On the northern hemisphere we see the sun go from east to west, because the earth rotate from west to east. When you are above the northern pole you see the earth rotate anti clockwise.
Seen from above the southern pole it rotates clockwise.

West to east and that's why Japan is called the land of rising sun because it is the most nearest to 360 degree longitude.
