I believe the term came from the analogy of a Cat that has fallen into a pool of water.

The Cat, in Life-or-Death desperation, will wildly swings its paws ( and claws ) in an attempt to catch onto something solid...that will enable it to crawl back out of the water to safety.

However, a life of " screaming, crying, clawing desperation"...seems to refer to Depression &/or Despair.

Screaming & Crying amounts to " Cries for Help/Attention ".

Clawing Desperation implies that the individual is " Overwhelmed...has Lost Control/or is quickly Losing Control...And Realizes the fact that their predicament is, in a way, " drowning " them!...The individual may feel Suicidal... Fighting/Clawing to Gain Hold on any means to Pull themself together!

If You know of someone in this condition...it is imperative that They receive medical assistance ASAP!...There are many means of therapy...and most treated individuals now live Happy & Fulfilling lives!

well desperation is the state of being desperate. and clawing just means grabbing, clutching or swiping (as an animal with claws might do).

so "clawing deperation" is being desperate to a point where you're grabbing at anything and everything to try and stay secure. in the context of the quote you gave, it's something like being constantly on the edge and fighting for survival.

actually it is two words. The phrase implies chronic desparation.. sort of like how you might react if you awoke to find you had been buried alive.. you would claw desparately to get out of the coffin.. I don't think you would want to be in the way of someone experiencing clawing desparation..
