I saw an interview with the couple that made the movie and as I recall, they didn't base it on a specific incident in the Bahamas. Now, I may be wrong, but that's what I recall.

There was a big stink in 1999/2000 in Australia where an american couple staged their own deaths by not returning to the dive boat. They had someone meet them out on the GBR. The dive operation was accused (and rightly so) for not doing a headcount but when it was discovered that the American couple did it intentionally, the Australian operator was exhonerated from manslaughter charges. I don't recall ever hearing the names of the couple. Because this story was well publicised, the makers of Open Water might have gotten the idea from this incident.

Very bad film.. speaking as a diver.. I've never seen anyone dive without a compass !! hellllooooo
