Funny I was thinking about this the other day!

I think:

a conference is a speech given to a large group of invited people on a specific subject.

a workshop sounds more hands on and gets people involved in the learning process.

a seminar sounds more like information learning in an educational invironment.

Seminar, a group gets together with an expert.

Seminar
A group of students engaged, under the guidance of an instructor, in original research in a particular line of study, and in the exposition of the results by theses, lectures, etc.; -- called also seminary.

They learn the theory of basket weaving for example.

Workshop. Actual hands on experience. The group actually weaves baskets.

Conference. conference (n.) An association of teams.

The basket weavers now meet with the rest of the company and tell all about their experiences with basket weaving.

1/Seminars are like lectures where you sit and listen to someone.
2/Workshop are usually held over a couple of days and the times you attend will vary and will probably consist of a discussion and might invite you to offer ideas or opinions both verbally and in written form.
3/Conferences are usually held by professional bodies usually ina hotel or exhibition centre where there maybe several guest speakers and interested organisations or parties.
