The latter I'm afraid. Certainly on this site anyway. I've had five violation notices in the past two days and I reckon I've got a few more to come. I don't think I'm going to get away with my question about Yahoo funding Al Queda, but you never know.

I think this is debatable. Yes you can pretty much say what you like on the Internet, BUT the people who host what you say may have a different opinion. Most ISPs or hosts will have something in there small print that says, Racism, Sexism will not be tolerated.
I think the Humans as a whole are to narrow minded to be truly free when they speak. Freedom of Speech is being able to say, "I think a womans place is in the home" for someone to then reply, "No I don't think you are right, you are entitled to your opinion but I do not agree with it" other than "shut up your narrow minded sexist!!"
Plus the fact you can't swear on here Mr b****cks, should demonstrate that the web isn't TRULY a area of free speech. The web is freer than most as it isn't policed as tightly as it should be.. e.g. If you walked out on to the street now and started calling all the African's that horrible "N" word, you'd probably get arrested for racism. If you did that on the internet you'd probably get a slap on the wrists and told not to do it again.

Well, the internet allows you freedom of speech, unless you are living in a country like China that has very strict moral and political no-no's, one of them being logging against the Government etc.
Also, nowhere do you get freedom of speech, because if you speak too much, you'll land in trouble....
I doubt freedom of speech exists in its true meaning anywhere in the world...!
Anyways, the internet does offer freedom of speech to a certain level....
And even if it doesnt, there are some ways to get around it *winkwink*

No, we are not free to express on the internet yet. For example, blogging is monitored.
China obviously is a good example. "the great firewall of china" is expanding every month with sites being blocked and bloggers being removed. To have a blog it nmust be registered with the Media Development Authority.
But, things are changing in china, "operation anti-censorship" is a privacy tool that enables the Chinese to gain uncontrolled access to the web while being undetectted.
Here are some blogs causing a stir in China:

Google and China? Not exactly freedom of speech is it? But again ... Most sites let you express your true feelings that is ... As long as you know that anytime you enter cetain words deemed sensitive ... Someone is going to check what you write as well as trace the source of writing (You).

well, you can try writing anything on the internet and then wait for the repurcussions or reactions... on the other hand, if it's freedom of speech you are talking about, why all those asterisks in your question???

Yes and No. You still have to obey the laws within the country you are posting in. There is nothing stopping you from going to other countries to post.

yes i think so. it's just a bit depressing to find out what people want to talk about. kevin smith said something like this, ' the internet has given everyone a voice, unfortunately everyone is using that voice to swap pornography and ***** about movies.'
( i just previewed this and i cant say ***** , ***** , ***** ***** i guess that goes part of the way to answering your question.)
