Fear of the unknown... Ignorance.
Just smile and say Hi, That should freak them out.

I don't hate goths! One of my friends is a goth, and I think she's really cool. A lot of people think she's some kind of a Satanic freak, though, which, unfortunately, is a common misconception of goths (although one of my friend's friends is a Satanist). Most goths tend to be Atheist, instead.

As for what other people wrote, goths don't smell! This goth that I was talking about showers daily and has really nice and clean hair!

Many people are prejudiced against goths, but once you get to know them, you'll find that they're really nice, cool people. Besides, would you rather hang out with goths or chavs?

This is an assumption because goths are dressed in dark clothes...look different to the norm...and are unconventional and people are afraid of them. some are dark gloomy depressive characters who give off negative vibes and assume people hate them....like yourself. Oh and before you go on the defence ...I speak from experience. I may be 41 now but I was an original goth in the 80s wearing similar clothes to the goths of the day and my hair was black and spiky and crimped. I wore black nail varnish and black lipstick. tons of black eye makeup and black fingerless gloves even in summer. But I grew up...met my husband...built a business and had my son. Success and happiness take away the "nobody gets me" attitude. Now my son is 15 and he and his friends are goths. I am a lawyer but they all think I am cool. They have seen photos of my goth youth and I have so much time for them all. Remember my generation were there before you....don't assume that man in the suit or that mother with her young children starring at you hate you....they may be just reminiscing to their own days as a goth or wishing they had had the guts to be individual. A smile and a cheery hello works wonders too. Try it.

I don't think people hate you Goths, it is just that it was an interesting and appropriate look back in the early 1980's but not any more, 25 years later.

I suppose it was apt to dress like that in places like Leeds in 1982 because back then times were generally pretty depressing with mass unemployment etc . but to be honest it looks a bit silly in Bournemouth in 2006 or whatever - times and society have changed.

Still I am guessing you are a teenager or something so it is a good time in your life to experiment with stuff.

I don't think people do hate goths. They just choose to take the mick out of them because they have decided to look a certain way. I used to dress quite gothic because I found it pretty. I have toned it down a bit now though, but there are still elements of it in my outfits. Really its no different to anyone deciding to wear anything. Certain people will laugh because they think that Goths look different from them or that Goths are trying to be different but failing because they all look like each other! (Thats why my sis used to laugh at me) Its stupid. Be proud of how you dress, its your choice.

I don't hate goths, actually, I find that living in London is the best place in the world if you want to express yourself differently through your dress sense... but not every place on this planet is that open minded. People are just afraid of what they don't know and in many cases, associate the goths with devil worship...
In my case, the only thing is that I sometimes wonder if you actually like your clothes of if you just dress to go against establishment and fashion... but then I guess you guys must be wondering the same about me too...

I don't think that people actually hate goths, as much as they are unsure and uneasy around them. Me personally-- I honestly (not saying that I should) think that gothic people look scary: their makeup is dark, their clothes are black and they wear spokes and pins all throughout their clothes!! I know we shouldn't judge but your style of dress is a little uninviting! When you picture a scary 'bad person'-goth kind of fits the perception.

But, from now on I'll try to stay calm, cool and collected LOL

I dont hate goths,
Some of the clothes are gorgeous - like the "pretty" goth type clothes, like this see thru top with gold shimmery cobwebs on and wicked sleeves that dangled everywhere - but it was so expensive - dont you find that gothic clothes cost a bomb!

I have no idea. It's probably the same reason why people hate others for being of a different race, nationality, gender, etc.
For all I care, you can run around wearing a figleaf and it'd be no skin off my back. I'm 45 and one thing I've learnt in all my years of living is that you can never judge a person by how they look.

I quite like goths actually, I went out with a little cutie gothic boy when I was about 14! And most of my friends are, but personnally I find it a little depressing... and it's chavs that I have a problem with!

I don't hate goths - I have a great respect for them and admire their confidence. To wear clothes that society see as "extraordinary" takes guts. If you feel comfortable in what you wear - who gives a rats *** about what other people think.

God bothers would see wearing black, with black make up, black hair - oh dear you must be worshipping the devil! Get real! Its called expression love!

Lady Godiva travelled through Coventry butt naked on a horse. Did anyone think she was nuts?? No!!

Good on ya girl! Wear what the heck you like!!
