gud question (i would say).
ppl need simplicity and need easiness for browsing through pages.
take eg of google:
it has links on it pages but with comfortness. and it loads in no time as it has less data on pages.
whereas take instance of a beautified site, havin mnay flash clips, high reso background. It is very difficult for dialup user to open up.
next thing is designing. Public likes to see new types of themes and effects.

the most important thing in a web site is to be clear.not too complicated..and fast and the information u put in should be short and helpful.

I'd say simplicity. If it takes more than a minute for a new user to figure out how to navigate the site, it's probably too complicated.

desings... not flashy crap... keep it simple with good colors and smooth edges.
