We travel a lot to Scotland and get a different B & B every day or two. The North East is really lovely and that is also the cheapest, you can usually get B & Bs there quite easily and if you go to Spey Bay you MUST call in at the Baxters factory and see them and sample their soups and come home with some of their fare! If you go further up to Sutherland it is much more rural and you can see where people used to live before the Highlands were cleared, to see the remains of the houses is quite sad as you can just imagine the communities that would have lived there and how hard it must have been for them.
The West coast of Scotland is really BEAUTIFUL, however the prices are higher there and if you go in high season you are travelling in nose to tail traffic. (Which is why we tour the NE!)
Whereever you go you are guarenteed a good time. If I have one word of advice, having done a lot of B&B I would reccommend that you try to always stay at somewhere reccommended by the Scottish Tourist board. Some places that just do B&B are brilliant, but we once stayed at a place that was appaling and we had no come back as it was not listed with the tourist board.

Hello Sarah, it really depends on what kind of holiday you are looking for. The west coast and Skye for absolutely breathtaking scenery as has Loch Lomond and so many places in Scotland. Why not plump for Edinburgh as you can have it all. Plenty of everything including the chance to take in the scenery. I do not know when you propose to go on holiday but accommodation in Edinburgh this time of year can be hard to find though you don't necessarily have to stay in Edinburgh itself but could find accommodation outwith and get a travel card. Anyway whatever you decide you will enjoy, except the shops do close early and some of the food leaves a lot to be desired, but that's all part and parcel of taking holidays in Bonnie Scotland. You need more that a week though to enjoy it and Avon's Skin so Soft to keep the beasties away. But if you stay in Aberdeen you will know this.

A touring holiday in Scotland is always great. That way you don't miss anywhere good. If you come to Scotland quite soon it would be good because we are just having the hottest summer since 1976. Temperatures around 25 - 30 degrees.

I'd consider staying in various places rather than just one place. A few days in Edinburgh is a must as there are many things to see there, including the castle and places of interest throughout the old part of the city. I'd then try to spend a day in Glasgow, St Andrews, Stirling and Dundee (perhaps basing yourself in Edinburgh then travelling to these places as day trips). Afterwards then go for a few days in Highlands where you can enjoy Glencoe, Loch Ness, Fort William, Loch Lomond, etc.

Edinburgh and around that area is good for culture and the fringe festival-
If you like the great outdoors the lochs are goof - Loch Awe/Goilhead etc there are lovely log cabins you can stay in with the forestry commission
And i'f you're really adventerous go to the Grampians, its amazing and kind of strange as everything shuts at 5pm but the coast line its totally beautiful- lots to do!

Edinburgh is good but a bit expensive and very much set up for tourists. I live near Glasgow and the city has everything. Great shopping, restaurants, pubs, clubs etc and a very friendly vibe. It does seem to have an (undeserved) reputation for violence, but it is no worse than any other city. It is a terrific base for travelling, with good transport links to the whole of the UK and is surrounded by beautiful countryside. The only criticism that I have is that the public use the pavements as their great big litter bin.
!! Put your rubbish in the bins !!

If it's countryside and beautiful scenery you want, choose Loch Ness if you are after a vibrant, cultured holiday choose Edinburgh. especially during the festival.
