Toshiba Gigabeat! Never buy a iPod they are very bad!
Be careful buying Creative products as a lot of them have technical glitches! Creative is also going bankrupt so if you buy, the warranty will go when the company does!
Toshiba Gigabeat or an iRiver is the best option!

You can't beat an iPod, not only for the player but also because of the support you get from iTunes. If you are cash strapped try the 1Gig Nano although I know you will regret not saving up a bit more and going for a 4Gig after a while.
As an alternative though a lot of the new mobile phones that are coming out support MP3's although they are still a bit hard to use. I bought a 1Gig memory card for my Nokia 6230 and presto! a 1 Gig MP3 player! I'm currently looking at a Nokia N91 which has 4Gig memory for MP3's but it's still a tad expensive.

i have a 20gb iPod and i love it. if all you want is an MP3 player that you plug into your computer, download songs and then play them, then you don't necessarily need a name brand - you can get good, cheap MP3 players from most electronics stores.
if, however, you're interested in 'managing' your music, then the important thing isn't the player, it's the software you use on your computer to access the player as a computer hard drive.
from this point of view, i would NEVER recommend iTunes cause basically it's apple's way of tying you to their product. there are all sorts of things with it like you can't transfer iTunes music between MP3 players, you can only download a song once (or twice, can't remember) etc.
but there's a fantastic software that i use called anapod from a company called red chair software
http://www.redchairsoftware.com/
they do software for heaps of mp3 players including creative, rio and apple (for all the models too). it's really cheap, has a built in browser (which means you can stream music from your mp3 player through your computer without having to download the music onto the computer), you can simply drag and drop music (as many times as you like) and the support is fantastic. i've never looked back. yeah the iPod has some faults (like most apple mac stuff) but it's pretty gorgeous and having excellent software makes it much less frustrating.
as for the price, like most technology it keeps going down - so if you're keen on something that's really new right now, be patient - in 6 or even 3 months, it'll already be cheaper.

The cheapest ones are cheap for a reason! We had a Logik one and I can't remember the make of the other crappy one(they were around £20-£30. Now we have a Morphy Richards which has built in DAB radio. I think it is something like £160. It's really good quality. The ipods and stuff like that, really aren't worth the money. They do the same thing but just cost twice as much because of the name. They are no better really.

Don't buy ipod!! the batteries in them die after about 4 -5 years and theres not a lot you can do. I would say a creative zen micro but someone just said they are going bankrupt (might be a rumour). Anyway just buy something with a removable battery. eg a sony ericsson mobile phone like the w800 type series or try a psp.

depends on what you mean by expensive but to be honest if you want a decent one which can store 1000's then i'd buy a sony walkman. i've yet to find a cheap one which can store more than 500 which may seem like a lot but after a couple of days you have to change everything and that's really annoying after a while.

That guy was right about Creative's stuff, they're aces. I've got a 20GB Zen Touch and have never had a day's trouble with it. But whatever you get, please don't get an Ipod. They break if you look at them funny, the cost of repairs is insane, and don't even get me started on Itunes... Oh, and don't stick with the stock headphones. I got Sennheisers and couldn't believe the difference in sound quality. Happy shopping!

try looking in your local pc/electrical store and see what they have in there thats in your budget at least the staff will know what they talking about - you can get basic mp3 players from about £15 for 256k memory and then it goes up
