by the fire, your grandma told my grandma....".
I heard it while i was watching 'The Skeleton Key' starring Kate Hudson on DVD and this song was playing on the record player. It had been stuck in my head ever since.
Can somebody please tell me what's the title, by whom, and where can i download it?

It's called 'Iko Iko', and was originally written around 1950 by James Crawford. It was one of those songs which seemed to strike a chord with people, and quickly became a standard on the folk scene, leading to the misconception it's far older than it actually is.

Lots of people have covered it, including Buckwheat Zydeco, Cyndi Lauper, the Grateful Dead, Dr. John, Warren Zevon, Dave Matthews & Friends, and Glass Candy, although it was the Dixie Cups who popularised it when their version was used in the film 'The Big Easy'. Their version is also the one you heard playing in 'The Skeleton Key'.

I heard that it was about the American Civil war and, while that makes sense, I've never heard anything definite about it.

If you search for the Dixie Cups version on whatever site you usually download your music from, I'm sure you'll find it. Alternitively, of course, Amazon have it.
