1) i believe the most crutial invention/discovery regarding physics would be "diferential equation" (maths concept) that allowed a lot of theories to come up, including most of the theories on electromagnetism, fluid mechanics or thermodynamics.
When mathematicians invented "differential equations", they opened the door to modern physics.(was it in the 18th century? can't remember, sorry... I'm sure my maths teacher told me about when differential equations were invented once, but can't remember.).
2) after that would probably come the osbervation instruments scientists use : microscope, telescope... that kind of things. These instruments allowed scientists to check their theories.
3) one of the biggest discoveries was that you shouldn't concern yourself about religious problems when studying science. (if we hadn't, the earth would still be flat and thunder still the wrath of god... and most science inventions would be classified as witchcraft)
4) quantum physics and nuclear power plants. (fission and maybe fusion, in the future)
5) computers : allow the scientist to rest while a machine does all the work for him. ;-)
