I'm a bit confused but it's early and this is my first of the day.

Are you just installing a kitchen, and 5 by 8 is the space you have to work with? OR,,, does the kitchen exist already and you wish to "accessorize" it with small appliances and decorative touches?

I've been in this business a long time but have never seen a dishwasher that sits on any cabinets. There may be a brand that does, I've just never seen one.

I'll assume the sink plumbing might be in already? The small size suggests everything should be against the walls, and the counter tops not much deeper than 24 inches.

In any size kitchen the main appliances that facilitate "time efficiency" should be within easy reach certainly. The sink, centerally located, with counter top space on each side, with a stove either to the right or left, separated by counter top, or directly opposite the sink in the case of that 5 by 8 rectangle. Depending on the location designed for the refrigerator, you should decide right or left opening doors, unless of course it's a side by side, which seems impractical in your case. I'll give you an example.

My kitchen is more open than that but my refrig is against one wall at the end of the counter top. That's fine, and it's separate from the stove by a base cabinet. The problem is that it opens right to left, when it should open the opposite way, allowing access that allows food items etc. to be placed directly on the counter top.

Most kitchens have cabinets above also, and not always as deep as the base cabinets. You don't mention any windows or where a doorway might be, but those certainly take away storage and work space.

A dishwasher, if you have space for one, also takes away from storage space, but should be located adjacent to the sink and its plumbing for the sake of staging and placing the dishes in the washer.

Since working and storage space are critical in your situation, if this was my kitchen, I'd practice minimalism,,, NO cute decorations cluttering the counter top.

Consider the use of the flat space. Food Prep. Accessorizing may have to be a compromise. A small version of a microwave, or an under the cabinet mounted microwave. Cannisters may not work in this kitchen? "Cutting boards" can be kept stored until needed. Coffee makers, blenders, those bottles of alcoholic beverages, etc etc etc, should have homes other than on the counter top.

If the kitchen doubles as a pantry, you may consider arranging the storages spaces in an efficient manner as well as the appliance grouping. Plates and eating utensils in an easy reach of the approximate food prep area. Storage tubs and items not used often can be as far out of reach as possible. Cooking utensils in cabinets adjacent to the stove, etc etc etc.

All I've said certainly may be a moot point if the kitchen is already installed, but the point is, while you're in the kitchen, doing what it's designed for, make the most use of that small space, efficiently in how it and you function together.

By the way,. decorating is a personal thing. There would be no right or wrong answers here, as it's pretty much based on personal opinion and preference.

Go to the houses of your friends mothers and ask them, or your own mom. Everyone has great ideas for helping with small spaces, remember it is your kitchen now so do what you like, there is no special way to do it. Only get the things you use. If you dont' make bread why have a bread machine to take up space.

the best idea is to draw up a rough
'plan" alot depends on what you want eg dishwasher, wall oven etc.. also think plumbing with sinks and garbage disposali. so if you keep your sink in same place try to make a triangle with the fridge and stove. never but fridge near stove because it costs more to run your fridge

1 best way is to take suggestion from everyone and then think over all of them again and then from that make your own idea as your the one to use it...i know this beacause i often have seen my mom and aunts doing this.........
HOPE YOU WILL HAVE A COMFORTABLE AND AN IDEAL KITCHEN!!!!!!!!!
