she is not a close friend, just afriend from my previous job. We never meet up or anything, or call each other to chat etc

But dont get me wrong she is a lovely girl, and we do text every now and then. I suppose she knows my bluntness and honesty, i just wish i'd phrased it better

yes and no, i think white lies sometimes can get you out of mischief but u gotta have a good memory. u spoke ur mind and told her the truth thats ok, maybe if u worded it a wee bit better it mightnt sound as blunt????

Well then whats the problem? You say you aren't close so what do u have to lose by being honest? And yes honesty is always the best policy- you gain someones trust and respect by being honest and up front.
It's far better to tell her that you don't want to go than to just lead her down the merry path and make her think that you are closer friends.

Go, get mindlessly pis,,d, show ya **** to all and throw up on a few people. You get to leave early and none of the other bores will think to invite you to their sewing circle or bible classes. I've always been too honest, upsets some, gets vast respect from others. Life's to short to procrastinate about such doodly.

I am not saying it is right to lie but sometimes you have to try and be a little economical with the truth to spare peoples feelings. This is obviously an important night for her and maybe you should not have been so blunt with her. xx
