I know this isn't from a pet or maybe somebody has one of these, anyway, I was walking along the beach and came upon this. I'm guessing it's an egg sac for something. It is roughly 8"X4"X1"" in size. What "something" did it come from?

It's kind of a hard shell. It had a open slit, length wise about 3" long I think. No I didn't try and open it because it was empty.

Mermaids purse, definitely. It's the egg casing of a skate, ray or dogfish:

I am not sure, I think its a sac from a type of flatfish, when I was a child, many eons ago, we called them Witches' Purses. I will watch your question to see if someone comes up with the real answer

It looks very similar to something called a "Mermaid' Purse" which is an egg sack that holds the eggs for the Lesser-spotted Dogfish...a very cool find! :)

The only things I could find that looked like that at all were spider egg sacs, but none that looked exactly like that. Sorry.

wow maybe its a seed pod from a tree washed up on the beach from another country - wow it kinda looks like a creepy thing have you tried opening it , cutting into it? does it have an opening? whats it made of? hehe im curious now! oh you mean its a man made sack? lets know ...im really interested now

well it didint come from a bird or any type of land animal but maybe some fish that got washed up on shore but the fish is gone now...IDK!!
