Origin of the name "Dracula"
King Sigismund of Hungary, who became the Holy Roman Emperor in 1410, founded a secret fraternal order of knights called the Order of the Dragon to uphold Christianity and defend the Empire against the Ottoman Turks. Its emblem was a dragon, wings extended, hanging on a cross. Vlad III’s father (Vlad II) was admitted to the Order around 1431 because of his bravery in fighting the Turks. From 1431 onward Vlad II wore the emblem of the order and later, as ruler of Wallachia, his coinage bore the dragon symbol.

The word for dragon in Romanian is "drac" and "ul" is the definitive article. Vlad III’s father thus came to be known as "Vlad Dracul," or "Vlad the dragon." In Romanian the ending "ulea" means "the son of". Under this interpretation, Vlad III thus became Vlad Dracula, or "the son of the dragon." (The word "drac" also means "devil" in Romanian. The sobriquet thus took on a double meaning for enemies of Vlad Tepes and his father.)

Dracula....from Vlad Dracula, son of Vlad Dracul,
Dracul: Dragon or Devil....Dracula, son of the Devil. Or son of the Dragon.
Vlad Dracula or Vlad Tepes (Impaler) was the ruler of Wallachia.
I don't remeber the years. But yeah, his father Vlad Dracul was part of the Order of the Dragons. Hence the knick name.
The book Dracula is loosely based on Vlad the Impaler because he has been recognized historically for his cruel punishments.
I watch the history channel too.
George Bush is evil. Blah blah blah....why does every damn hippie on here have to use every question as another vehicle for his political frustration? God almighty that's so annoying.

His Romanian surname Draculea (transliterated as Dracula in foreign languages of the historical documents where his name is mentioned) seems to come from his father's surname Dracul (see Vlad II Dracul), who was a member of the 'Order of the Dragon' created by Emperor Sigismund. The family of Vlad III Basarab had two factions, the Draculesti and the Danesti.
His post-mortem moniker of Ţepeş (Impaler) originated in his preferred method for executing his opponents, impalement, popularized by medieval Transylvanian pamphlets.
He is known in Turkish as Kazıklı Bey (Impaler Prince).
He was refered to as Dracula in a number of documents of his times, mainly the Transylvanian Saxon pamphlets; also "The Annals of Jan Jan Długosz" ISBN 1901019004
Outside Wallachia he was known by the exaggerated tales of atrocities (many of which stem from records of debatable authenticity) and even more so — the title of vampire, and it has been suggested that his surname Dracula was the source of inspiration for the name of the main character of Bram Stoker's 1897 horror novel, Dracula

Dracul is Romanian for Dragon, actually the historical Dracula was Son of the Dragon, it was his father who was first dubbed Dragon but the son did live up to the title as well as 'The Impaler' for his habit of staking people.

What on earth do you mean? If you mean fictional vampires like Dracula, it derives from the surname 'Draculia'. If you mean shite like 'Edward' or whatever that muppet is called, then it is simply a name with no real meaning.
