consider the message being communicated.
consider the audience.
a deaf person would not welcome a telephone or radio broadcast.
a blind person the tv or video.
Also the method of communication may limit your audience, its no good advertising kids toy's or sweets etc in a cinema during an adult showing , for example. but show them on a saturday morning during prime time kids viewing and hey presto!
Another aspect may be that the message may need to be more personal or convey some form of emotion - sincerity for example. To give somebody news of the death of a close relative, say, may be best done in person rather than a quick note through the letter box or a message on the answaphone.
the situations are endless......

Well distance and terrain are two of the major problems. Radio won't work if the transmitter and reciver are too far apart or if there are mountains in the way. Land-lines (e.g. telephone) will only work if there are cables connecting the two points.

satelite commmunication is probably the best but it is expensive and can ocasionally be interuppted by solar flares.

It depends on your constraints and what society accepts as the norm. Depending on how much time you have, money to spend, language, culture and location barriers - these factors all influence what medium you choose to communicate with.

Cost
Location
Understanding (eg, semaphore is useless if you are using it with someone who cannot read it! - or talking is not a good method of communication if you speak different languages!)
Technology

I wrote this and then looked on Wikipedia.
It was fascinating also reading about communication on there - that gave lots of information about problems etc. Too much to cut and paste!

Good luck with your project!

distance
urgency
audience
resources

Letters can be unreliable, recipient needs to be able to read/understand the written message.

Phone calls can be expensive, difficulty may be experienced in connection, reception may be poor.

Emails need accurate addressing, the recipient may not 'open' their mail regularly, system may be down.

Faxes may not be received.

Actually, (my family will bear this out), my favourite method of communication is to SHOUT!!
