Linear geometry: sp orbital of N has an e-pair that co-ordinates with the metal forming a sigma-bond Thus O-triple bond-N-M is linear

Non-linear: The metal atom/ion should be at a low oxidation level and have a pair of e in an appropriate d orbital (like dz2) so that it can combine with a receiving orbital of N (should be sp2 since you have O=N< )

So linear when the e pair is donated by N and non-linear when it is donated by the metal.
