Humans always pride themselves to be a higher species because of their ability to think and make decisions. In my opinion, the ability to think is starting to get in the way of our lives. Because people think, and everyone think differently, quarrels and fights are started. Because people think, their school essays get discredited; students are not supposed to think, they are supposed to 'think' like people of the past who had written some books or some form of evidence and include those in the essays. Because people think, those who don't think have to conform to the ideas of the former. Because people think, they cannot come to a decision about some things and it will always be there, never-ending, never gonna be solved. Because people think. Too much in fact. Wouldn't it be good if everyone just do things without thinking too much? Go for it. On impulse. On instinct. Would that make things better? Look what has all the thinking done to us. Yes, we have the technology, the entertainment and everything else which people of the past did not have but we no longer have the simplicity in people. I'm not saying that people in the past did not think but they were smarter. They don't think so much. What's the point of thinking so much and still no conclusion and decision could be made? Doesn't that make you feel worse?
Bottomline: we think too much. Don't k. To whoever this is applicable to.

You need to find an activity or hobby that will keep your mind focused on one thing and not twenty. Reading a book would be great to start with because your mind will paint the picture of what is going on while you read. So you will be using all of your mind to do the one thing.

You could be suffering from a mild anxiety disorder that causes your mind to race...and you can't turn it off. It is highly treatable...consult a professional for this. It could practically turn your life around overnight...and it would be my best guess. In times of stress, we often turn things over and over in our minds. There is also a possibility you have the more mild form of a Bi-Polar disorder...but it is more difficult to diagnose....so inquire about anxiety for right now...and then you will know if you have to pursue this further.

Find an outdoor occupation or activity. Gardening, for example.
Big outdoor spaces and other life forms can help break the self-absorption pattern.
Walk, hike, go to new places.
Keep a pet?

I suffer from the same problem, for years and years now. I have books about being psychic and about how to heal ones wounds. Nothing seems to help me. I hope you have better luck.

You must learn to ignore your thoughts. krishna says in the geetha that active matter is greater than dead matter; mind is greater than active matter; intilligence is greater than the mind and teh self is greater than even intilligence; Now perhaps you see that you are spending too much time with something that is not really great; you need to reason yourself out of unnecessary thougt and keep silent; god will guide you;

Learn to relax. Get a relaxation tape or program and learn how to chill out. Physical exercise is also good for anxiety.

Yoga and meditation.
Read Pollyanna (and that's serious advice!).
Allow yourself to really fall in love (I know it hurts and it brings a whole lot of other problems, but it is soooo exhilirating!)

Get out and DO something. Don't take yourself so seriously! There's a big old world out there that needs your participation. Don't waste your energy, brooding. That way lies depression!

go to a golf driving range and hit 100 golf balls.
works for me.
it completelly empties my mind, because I focus on that ball, and nothing else matters.
also, any other kind of sport and activity helps.
even dumb computer games.
its all about distract your mind from your thinking. doing things where you need to concentrate on something, thats it basically.
