It is a tradition followed in the country especially by the older generations. The practice has started to become more uncommon though with the youth. In India, 1 was supposed to be connected with the sun. the sun is supposed to give light and prosperity to the world. And by adding a 1 to the amount, we wish the reciever to have prosperity with it. The practice is purely supersticious.
