step (b) multiply it by two 2X

step (c) add eight 2X + 8

step (d) devide the total by two (2X + 8)/2 = X + 4

step (e) subtract the original number (X + 4) - X = 4

Suppose the Number is X
so the formula could be..
(2X+8)/2 - x = n
X + 4 -X = n
n = 4
For every X Є R

Let x be the number you choose and N the number you end up with. Then following your steps, you have:

N = ((2x+8)/2) - x

2N = 2x + 8 -2x

2N = 8

N=4

That's how.

(a) N
(b) 2N
(c) 2N + 8
(d) ( 2N + 8 ) ÷ 2 = N + 4
(e) ( N + 4 ) - N = 4
(f) 4

You came to know the answer because the answer is the same regardless of which number you start off with.

(2x+8)/2-x = y

(2x +8 -2x) / 2 = y
8 / 2 = y = 4

therefore y always equals y...doesnt matter what y is
