I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

1. Backup all your personal data. - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/how_to_backup_files.html

2. Turn off system restore. -
http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/disabling_system_restore.html

3. Download, install and update anti-spyware software - here you have two choices, you can download free anti-spyware software - - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_spyware.html - or you can purchase anti-spyware . (If you don't have up-to-date anti-virus software you can get free anti-virus software here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_anti_virus.html)

If you are a home user and you are going to use free anti-spyware software I recommend using using four programs to clean an infected computer. These are not in any specific order. SpyBot Search & Destroy - anti-spyware software, AdAware - Personal Edition - anti-spyware software, Windows Defender (WinXP) - anti-spyware software and finally HiJackThis. In my experience, I have found that running all of these programs simultainiously will remove most, if not all spyware/adware.

4. Download, install and update a personal firewall - . Click here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/what_is_a_firewall.html - to learn what a firewall is, and how to turn on the Windows XP firewall.

5. Download, install, update and run anti-virus software if you haven't already. (If any viruses are found remember to turn off system restore - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/disabling_system_restore.html - then remove the virus.)

6. Use Windows Update to make sure your operating system and browswer are up-to-date with the latest security patches.

7. Disconnect from the Internet and run the anti-spyware software in safe mode and remove any critical items found. For information on how to start a computer in safe mode - click here - http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/how_to_start_in_safe_mode.html.

8. While still in safe mode, run msconfig and search the start-up menu for suspicious start-up items.

9. Reboot the computer in normal mode and run the anti-spyware applications again.

10. Reconnect to the Internet and see check to see if there are any signs of spyware.

Not all Spyware can be removed easily. It takes patience and persistance to remove some of the most stubborn infections.

As a last resort you can reinstall Windows but, if you choose this solution you will lose all of your data stored on the hard drive.

Once your computer is spyware-free, keep it that way by not visiting questionable websites, verifying that the free software you are about to download is spyware-free (always read the EULA (End User License Agreement) before you install any free software), and do not open email attachments from unknown sources!

Also - use a more secure web browser such as Mozilla Firefox to help prevent infections in the future - you can download it from here http://www.vermontpcsolutions.com/tools_browsers.html.

Good Luck!
