(A lazy and flippant way of engendering a discussion about accent, idiom, colloquialism in the written word. I like trying to guess if what I am reading here (or there) comes from an American finger or elsewhere)

No, no, no, young Master Badger: Nobody but nobody says; 'po-TART-to' that was just artistic licence on the songwriter's part. And it worked!

In Spanish is "Tomate." And it is pronounced the way it is spelled. We don't suffer so much over phonetics as English speakers do.

All joking aside, I think your query is an interesting one. Many a time I ask myself the same thing. I use idiomatic phrases to identify the author's country of origin. Like the word solicitor instead of lawyer. Also, the way words are spelled can give clues like colour instead of color, etc.

Good question, loved to ponder on it.

What if I told you that I pronounce it "tomYEToh"? I don't but I wonder what linguistic can of worms involving linguistic assumptions that could potentially open.
