I've heard that. The peace sign being based on an ancient rune. Well, that might be true. But don't believe everything you see on the media. For your own interest, do a little research. Try out this article for starters. http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/24/247.html

The peace sign is actually a cross with its horizontal bar broken in two and resting at the foot of the vertical bar. It represented society's disenchantment with the Christian religion because of its failure to deliver it's promises of love, equality, justice and peace for the world. This was quite common during the 60s to the late 70s. Better check just to be sure. Peace. :o)

Yes...in a way. But is "an upside-down cross" what was intended?

Some say it is intended to be the footprint of a dove (hence the bumper stickers of the 60's calling it "the footprint of the American chicken.") So in that case, it would not be an upside down cross, but a mere coincidence.

Another interpretation of the peace symbol is that it is meant to represent the "cross of St. Peter," who, when he was about to be put to death by crucifiction, said that he was not worth to be put to death in the same way as Jesus, and so asked to be crucified upside down. The side bars would have to be bent downward for support in that case. So, in this way of looking at it, it *is* an upside down cross, but not in a way meaning disrespect for the cross, but one man's very much *elevated* respect for the cross of Jesus Christ, and his own subsequent humility.

The peace sign is just the remenant of the ancient solar symbol (which used to have three curved lines instead of straight). the solar symbol was always a sign of peace and fertility. It has nothing to do with the cross which is related to a four-point symbol (the four elements) and the sacred tree.

Some say it is the upside-down Norse Rune Algiz, or Ehlaz, for "Elk", and it means protection. It resembles (when right side up) a person standing with their arms spread wide, and upwards, as if warding off danger.

Yes, it is the upside-down sign of the pagan fertility symbol that the cross stems from. Good observation.

the peace sign is known as the cross of nero, a roman emperor known for his persecution of early christians. the story goes that a christian was to be crucified as christ was, but he begged another method of execution, citing his own unworthiness to die as his savior did. so nero had him crucified upside down, with the crossbeams broken downward in disrespect.
