"Finding Fish" is the story of an abused boy growing up and being juggled from one foster home to another. It is a great story, and they made a film of it called "Antwone Fisher Story" or something like that, but the book is much, much better.
Another book you might like is "The Quiet Room" by Lori Shiller, which is about a young woman's fight with schizophrenia. This book changed every perception I had about people with schizophrenia and I would recommend it to anyone.

The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen: A modern family saga.
Here on Earth by Alice Hoffman: Destructive love but not a romance novel.
The Wishing Box by Dashka Slater: magic-realist novel of a family history.
Stones for Ibarra; Consider this, Senora by Harriet Doerr. Each sentence is perfect.
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote: May be the first non-fiction novel.
A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole: Innovative, sad, and funny.
The Reader by Bernhard Schlink: A novel about sex, love, reading, and shame in post war Germany.
Dog Eat Dog: A novel by Edward Bunker: A real life bank robber and a great writer. Not a typical crime novel. Realism that no other crime novelist can create.
Good Reading!

I like Falling Leaves... its about a Chinese daughter who was unloved from the very beginning. A Widow for One Year by John Irving and Sophie's Choice. For light reading try A Girl With Pearl Earrings. Try books by John Saul for hair-raising thrillers.

Get the book "The Time Traveler's Wife". Despite the fact that is sounds like a Sci-Fi book - it isn't. It's a love story and a great one at that.

If you would like a new venue Eragon by Christopher Paolini is good. The fact that it was written by 15 year old boy is even more amazing.

I think you would like The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It is her memoir of growing up in poverty, pretty much because of her parents' choice and dad's alcoholism. Eventually, she and her siblings escape that life and start over in New York, only to be followed by her parents who choose to be homeless.
