I believe that the Nazi's systematic genocide of the European Jewish community during World War II was the most notable crime of the 1900's.

The Russian communist purges may come a distant second.

I wouldn't count the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan as this was two countries at war and, despite the horrendous loss of civilian lives, the bombing prevented a drawn out invasion of Japan which would have resulted in far higher casualties for both sides.

The most notable and one of the most heinous crimes of the past century is rarely metioned or discussed these days.
.I am refering to the genocide that occured in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge
This regime was the most lethal regime of the century..It has been estimated that 1.2-1.7 million people were massacred by the Khmer Rouge from 1975-1979..

The Khmer Rouge took controll of Cambodia on April 17,1975 following the fall of the Lon Nol government. It has been stated that the suspension of aid from the US, was a contributing factor to the fall of Cambodia"s government .
When the Khmer Rouge regime took complete control of the country ,cities were depopulated and urban populations turned into agricultural communes with all economy proceeds benefiting the Regime and its members.

The workers in these communes were forced to work 12 hrs nonstop without rest ,food or water. They didn't receive westernized medical care but traditional peasant care.As a result many died, unnecessarily.

The Regime also developed a complex language and cultural system to define a speakers rank and social status.Family relationships not sanctioned by the regime resulted in death for both parties.

During this time many people were put to death and killed in one of four designated fields referred to as the "killing fields"Most of those killed were the elderly, the young, woman, persons with political ties to the prior government., professionals, buddist monks, cambodian christians and muslims.

The movie," The Killing Fields" is based on the mass massacre of the people of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge Regime..

Footnote:The surviving members of the Khmer Rouge regime will go on trial for genocide in 2007.

Billy's Blow - Job .

Really, all the genocide that happened ... Holocaust in Western Europe ... Cambodian genocide ... the Yugoslavia-Hersogovenia ... and now Darfur ... sadly there are so many more that happened, but the Jewish commnities have only allowed the spotlight to focus on the "Halocaust" for sympothy ... wish they'd allow media to focus on the other junk out there too.

Those mentioned are rather war events, so I would say the assassination of prince Franz Ferdinand in 1914. It was just a murder, but the result was notable...
