Did you watch "Twin Peaks"? One of the characters in it, the midget actor who speaks to Kyle MacLaughlin's character in dreams, claims that he used to speak backwards all the time growing up with his best friend, and was probably part of the inspiration for the weird special effect when they speak backwards. Director Lynch reverses it so that each word is re-editted to sound forwards again. In fact that actor was at one time selling custom-made recorded voice messages online for any fan who wanted it for their answering machine.
