You may take the weekly direct train to Chandigarh from Chennai,From Chandigarh rail station, you can get prepaid auto to reach Chandigarh bus station from where buses are available to Kullu and Manali. From Manali you may visit Rhothang pass by Taxi where snow is present throughout the year. This road will be closed during Winter . Sulphur spring can be seen at a temple at Manali. On way back, Manikaran, which is a holy place for Sikhs can be visited only if you travel by taxi from Chandigarh. Here too many sulphur springs are there. Many adventure sports are available at Manali.
Coming back, if you cannot connect the direct train to Chennai, you may come to Ambala which is about 50 KM from Chandigarh by bus whic stops just opposite to the railway station( every 20 mts buses available ) and there are many trains to Delhi from here and then to Chennai .Or you may also take a bus to New Delhi fro Chandigarh. All the best.

Take a train to new dehli..;if you want to go to beautifull manali(vashish is higly beautifull nearby village where you can stay next to the hoth baths.
Anyway from New dehli...go out of the trainstation straight into paraganj and buy a ticket for the fast 16 hour bus ride to manali...or about 12 to kulu...i must admit that I find vashish, and of course(but be carefull )manikaran in the damn I forgot the name ...in the valley of manikaran anyway..its also real nice!So fast train then bus!
the flights will be very expensive to kullu! mail me for more info...i love the himalaya and have been there many many times

Fly to Delhi from Madras, and then fly to Kullu from Delhi. You'll be there in no time at all. From Manali you can visit the sulphur baths in Vashisht, drive to Sangla or up to Rohtang. In Manali stay at Jimmy Johnson's Lodge. Best place in town- great prices too.

Shortest would be fly to Jammu and bus from there.. But no fun. Why not take a sleeper on the train. See the beautiful landscapes, eat fabulous food, meet wonderful people and arrive fresh. Then take the VIP bus. You don't need to know where to go when you get there. It's all good.
