America should not do anything to encourage even more illegal aliens from coming into this country. That means you: MEXICO!!! Financial oppression is the only way to get rid of this scourge...

Contrary to popular opinion, Canadian healthcare is not "free." Canadians pay very high taxes to finance the system...that is, Canadians who actually work. Only lazy bums get it for free.
By the way, I hope you like waiting months for common procedures...even some that are life-threatening. Some Canadians die while waiting for an operation to save their life. Rich or poor does not matter. My mom had to wait 4 months for cataract surgery...she could have gone blind in that time. It is illegal to pay for a private doctor to get an operation faster...ergo, many Canadians who can afford it will travel to the US to get critical operations.
There are problems with healthcare systems on both sides of the border. Neither system is "cheap," it simply a matter of when you pay the bill and to who. Personally, I prefer the American system. Many of the problems here, such as the oft-hyped "40 million uninsured" are not nearly the problem that fearmongers would have you believe. Virtually every American city has emergency rooms and clinics where anyone can get FREE healthcare. The real problem in our country is providing care to the rural poor who don't have access to those facilities. The other main problem here is the cost of prescription medication....pharmacuetical companies appear to own all the politicians in this country.

It isn't free in Canada. Their taxes reflect the cost. Socialized medicine has its perks and draw backs. The perk is easy use due to no emediate money transaction. The draw back is the field is paid less as government employess so there are less health providers. Canada is experiencing what they call the "brain drain". This is where the best and brightest health care providers move to the states so they can make better money.
Another draw back is related to that last statement. Getting appointments for procedures is a struggle as they always have backed up logs and not enough peeps to do the work.

Healthcare is not free in Canada. Money is subtracted from every cheque. It is like contributing to an HMO. Canadians invest in their healthcare all of their working lives.
We don't get ripped off by insurance companies. Our money is held in trust, and when we become ill, that money is used to take care of us. It is not socialism. We pay for it, not the government.
This rumor that appointments are backed up is just not true. If you are really ill, you will have no trouble seeing the doctor, taking tests, or having specialists check on you.
If it is just a check up from a doctor or specialist, then you will be seen at a later date.
Americans are so bamboozled by the strong AMA and pharmaceutical lobbies. If you had the Canadian system of healthcare, these guys would have to play fair.
My relatives in Indiana tell me what they go through to get proper care and medicine. It's horrible! In the waiting room in the States, people are talking about how they're going to pay for it. In Canadian waiting rooms, we talk about getting well.

I think we should have affordable health care. Canada does have free health care, but at what cost, people die waiting for minor procedures because their health care is free. I think jobs should have salary caps, that people should not be able to sue Doctors at the drop of a hat, so their malpractice insurance is not so high, and that the government should step in and stop all the high cost of health insurance. But.... this will not happen here in the good old USA because the politicians are to worried about what will serve them the best, and lining their own pockets.

I cant answer this because I am not highly informed, but I do live in Michigan and know that many people come over the border from canada to here to pay for surgeries out of pocket rather than wait on government lists for life saving treatment. Socialized medicine is scary to me because I can get the best doctors the minute I need them with private healthcare, but I do realize that is ONLY because my husband has a good job. I also know the number of working uninsured americans who don't qualify for medicare/medicaid has climbed dramatically. Is there a happy balance? I don't know. I also know hospitals in america must treat you regardless of your ability to pay, so I don't know how different it would be? Please inform me, truly I'm a bit ignorant about it. We pay through the nose monthly, but I have peace of mind. I know people who have public healthcare here, take their kids to emergency for the littlest thing, but if I do, its a 125 dollar copay on my insurance, so i give them a tylenol and make them wait till morning. So who knows which is better?
*********************just to support my answer, it is often heart by-passes, brain or other tumor removals, or surgery to remove cancerous tissue that I hear about.*******************

Yes, there should be a "free" health care like in Canada as well as in many states in Europe. It is a Christian way of thinking to help the weakest, but you know that don't you? It is a better way to spend the taxpayers money than into weapon and conflicts around the world. Jesus did not ask for any money when he help the ill persons, nor should we.

Mexicans aren't trying to get into Canada...
If they had our problem, they'd have to reconsider as it would be a huge drain on their deficits and economy as a whole. Also there's the argument that giving out health care for free to everyone degrades the overall quality.
It's more complicated than that, and both sides have good arguments, but I'd have to say that there are more important holes to patch first before we consider it.

YES ! Becuase our current system sucks. We pay a lot for HMOs, PPOs, etc, and we still wait forever for appointments. All of the Canadians and Europeans we have talked with have positive things to say about their healthcare. I haven't heard a lot of positivity on our US systems.

it'd have to be introduced carefully - the first thing americans think of when they hear about canada's free healthcare is how easy they can scam it. for example, when the simpsons go to canada - homer leaps into traffic and shouts "i'm rich". i don't kow if he'd *actually* be rich, but you'd have to watch that people didn't try to scam it. plus it'd just be WAAAY expensive and all that. the government would go broke

yes, and unfortunately too many ignorant people do not understand that taxes are already taken out of our checks for medicaid, medicare and social security, the people who are affected the most are the ones serving you food at a restaurant, making your beds at hotels, greeting you at wal-mart and wiping your *** at the hospital since these people cannot afford healthcare and "make too much money" to qualify for the aforementioned gov't assistance...these are the people who should be provided more assistance
